1. What is the purpose of ClusterBalancer software?

The purpose of ClusterBalancer software is to increase server service availability and fault tolerance. Based on the clustering server system concept, ClusterBalancer software ties two server systems together to provide the service as one. This clustering system also allows flexibility for both service backup and system maintenance.

2. Who is ClusterBalancer software designed for?

ClusterBalancer software is specifically designed for small businesses who have servers to handle either internet or intranet services.

3. What do I need to know to use ClusterBalancer software?

There is no special technical knowledge required for using ClusterBalancer software. Anybody who knows enough of windows system to start an application can use ClusterBalancer software.

4. What is the system requirement for running ClusterBalancer software?

The only requirement for running ClusterBalancer software is that your server systems must be ruuning windows NT or 2000 software. Cross platform is OK (ie, Primary system running NT and Secondary system running 2000; or vice versa).

5. What is the difference of Hub and Switch connected clustered system and how would this difference affect using ClusterBalancer?

The difference in a network connected by a hub or by a switch is determined by their ways of sending network packets: while switch sends a packet to a predetermined node only, hub sends all packets to every node in the network and leave it to each node to decide if it is responsible to pick up a packet.

The switch connected cluster system will not carry out load balance because of this design, but it should not affect the normal function of File Sychronization and Firewall functions of ClusterBalancer package.

The benefit of setting up load balance in switch connected cluster system is: when failover occurs, load balance will assign all service requests normally handled by the Primary system to the Secondary system. So, if no load balance is set, this service re-assigning will not work.

6. What kind of services can ClusterBalancer/Load Balance handle?

ClusterBalancer/Load Balance can handle all server service requests. Some examples are: internet web server service, mail or ftp server services, intranet server service, etc...

7. What is server level failover?

System failover is the situation when one of the clustered systems is down entirely and all service used to be carried by it are now loaded on the still working system.

8. What is service/application level failover?

Service/application failover is when one (or some) of the load-balanced service or application stops functioning on one of the clustered systems, all service requests normally handled by the system will be now handled by the service/ application on the other system.

9. Is Active Directory Service (ADS) required for ClusterBalancer/Firewall?

No. ClusterBalancer/Firewall Operates independently.

10. Is there any securty protection with ClusterBalancer software?

Yes. A Firewall section is included in the ClusterBalancer package for local protection of the clustered server systems.

11. What type of firewall protection does ClusterBalancer/Firewall offer?

ClusterBalancer/Firewall can be installed only as 'host firewall' for local protections of the servers in the cluster system.

12. Can I deploy the same policies to both clucstered server systems?

Yes, you can setup policies on one system first then apply it to the other clustering system using the 'File System Sync Tool' in the package.

13. Is it possible to configure the firewall service to allow internal connectivity (ie no restriction) between the clustered server systems?

Yes, you can setup an internal network group with ClusterBalancer/Firewall and define a rule to open the restriction for the other system.

14. When installing ClusterBalancer software on the secondary system, can I install it on a drive (ie, D:) that is different from the Primary system's drive (ie, C:)?

Yes and No. ClusterBalancer/Load Balance and ClusterBalancer/Firewall will function with no difference with the situation. However, attempt to do file synchronization will fail if the file systems are not identical.
